Although earlier attempts at developing high-powered armor produced designs that were impractical for battlefield deployment, the Mark IV MJOLNIR powered exoskeleton would be the first successful powered armor that saw deployment onto the battlefield. Developed by Dr. Catherine E. Halsey, the MJOLNIR Mark IV was a radical redesign of powered exoskeletons making use of technological innovations that did not exist when work on the first MJOLNIR exoskeleton suit began. The Mark IV MJOLNIR armor was fielded November 27th, 2525 to August 29th, 2552.

The MJOLNIR/C Variant was developed and tested at UNSC facilities in Essen, Germany, and Songnam, Korea, respectively, integrating feedback gathered from the Jericho VII Theater. The intent of the MJOLNIR Mark VI Powered Assault Armor/C variant was to improve survivability in close combat, specifically by looking at alternate methods of K dispersal and improving joint mobility.

The MJOLNIR/V variant was developed and tested at a UNSC Low/Zero Gravity Testing Facility facility in Lister, Aigburth on Ganymede, integrating feedback gathered from the Summa Deep Space Incident. The V variant for the Mark IV still required a T-PACK for maneuvering in zero gravity.[1] The Mark VI MJOLNIR/V variant focuses on increasing exo-atmospheric endurance and improving mobility in zero gravity without the original use of back thrusters.[2]

The Recon armor was developed parallel to the Scout Armor in ONI's Ordnance Testing Facility B5D in Swanbourne, Perth, Western Australia. The main purpose of the Recon Armor was to create armor with stealth capabilities and with little or no loss of endurance, specifically by reducing its IR signature, reflective surfaces, and Cherenkov radiation emission. A similar helmet was also used in the Recon variant of the ODST Armor, possibly derived from the MJOLNIR's R variant.

The MJOLNIR/EOD variant was created at the UNSC Damascus Materials Testing Facility on Chi Ceti 4. The helmet was designed to channel the pressure wave of a nearby detonation around the user's head, significantly reducing the likelihood of decapitation in the event of an explosion. The MJOLNIR/EOD variant's pauldrons and chest plate were designed specifically to reduce the number of grabbing edges on the armor, decreasing the likelihood of dismemberment, and protecting Spartans during operations involving the handling of explosive ordnance (e.g., clearing/planting land mines, demolishing enemy structures/material and, or planting/defusing bombs).

Description: The Hayabusa is a powered battle armour system, similar to the standard Mark VI MJOLNIR, except stemming from Project HAYABUSA as opposed to Project MJOLNIR. It was developed by RKD, an Earth-based "think tank" in the year 2536, 16 years before the Mark V entered production. It was presented to the UNSC Ordnance Committee as an answer to the self-contained powered armor problem. Advanced materials are used in the production of the Hayabusa armor reducing the weight of the current generation armour by nearly a third (at that time). It is an armor permutation in Halo 3, and like all permutations, it has no effect on gameplay. The armour is commonly used on Halo 3 due to the fact that many people have obtained all 13 skulls needed to gain the whole set (excluding the copy Tilt skulll). The Katana, however, can only be unlocked by getting 1000 gamerscore on Halo 3. It also has been referred as the Ninja Armour, Power Ranger Armour, Haya Armour, or Samurai Armour. It may be based on Ryu Hayabusa from the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series.

Security Armor is a variant of the standard Mjolnir Mark V Powered Assault Armor. It is an armor permutation in Halo 3 multi-player. Bungie has confirmed all of the armor permutations have no effect on gameplay. This armor permutation is rather based off of the main character and protagonist in the Marathon Computer Game series.

Description:The SCOUT and RECON projects were run as parallel projects intended to develop a single variant of the MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor with stealth capabilities and no impact on endurance; however, the SCOUT variant relies heavily on highly advanced materials, making it much more expensive to develop this variant than the original Mark VI. It was tested in ONI's Ordnance Testing Facility B5D at Swanbourne, Perth, in Australia. The results gathered there showed that the SCOUT variant was very effective when it came down to stealth capabilities, but it never reached the phase of being mass produced for its Spartan II wearers all because of all the expenses needed for it.

Description: The MJOLNIR ODST helmet in Halo 3 is derived from the technology utilized in MJOLNIR armour. It is attained and unlocked by the Spartan Graduate Achievement, or getting 5 XP in Matchmaking. At one point in development the ODST helmet had an antenna on its back (See "Halo 3: PAX 2007 Omegathon Round 2 Cam Gameplay"; the antenna can be glimpsed for a brief moment when the player dies). The visor on the regular ODST helmets is blue, while the Spartan MJOLNIR ODST helmet has an orange visor.

Description: Created alongside the development of the Spartan II Program (and later the Spartan III program), MJOLNIR is the name of a series of Powered Armor suits designed to significantly improve the abilities of its wearer, giving superior physical strength, response time, velocity, and defensive capabilities. Originally designed only to protect its wearer from the projectile weaponry used by Insurrectionists, later variants, including the Mark V and Mark VI, would be equipped with an advanced personal energy shield reverse-engineered from captured Covenant technology. Between the external armor plating and the inner fabric suit is a layer of force-amplifying liquid crystal, used to increase speed, strength and reflexes.
